Identity Boxes



Dear Families,

We are creating identity boxes as part of our learning in Social Studies. As part of this task, students are invited to bring in one or two artifacts that represent their identity and values, which we have been reflecting on, as well as a family photo. If you would prefer to send a digital copy of a photo to me, please feel free to email it to shmawani@cbe.ab.ca

Examples of artifacts include:

- A natural object (seashell, rock)
- A small craft
- A miniature model of something meaningful
- A miniature flag
- A small toy


Objects should reflect the values of students. Along with the objects and photograph, students will include art work and a piece of writing that we are developing together.

Guided and Home Reading

We have been working at guided reading activity stations this week. Ask your student which ones they worked at. Students are encouraged to read for at least twenty minutes each evening to reinforce reading strategies that we are developing in class. They should be selecting books of interest from our Hawkwood Learning Commons, and also have access to Raz Kids for reading material. It is always helpful for students to read aloud to an adult to develop their fluency and get help with decoding and understanding unfamiliar words.
